Otodus Shark Teeth

Otodus Shark Teeth Collection

Buried Treasure Fossils offers exceptional Otodus Shark Teeth from the Otodus obliquus, one of the earliest mackerel sharks. As the apex predator of the early Eocene (approximately 50 million years ago), this shark is renowned for its teeth, which feature wide triangular crowns and distinct large side cusps.

While Otodus fossils are a staple for collectors, finding extraordinary, large (3"+) specimens in pristine condition is difficult. Many teeth on the market are damaged during crude extraction and suffer from poor repairs or reattached parts. We have painstakingly curated our inventory to offer only the finest examples—showy, large teeth free from the "remanufactured" quality standard elsewhere. If you are looking for genuine, museum-grade fossils with little to no damage, these specimens will be a pleasant surprise. Authenticity guaranteed.

Collecting the Ancestor of the Megalodon

For serious collectors, few fossils tell a story like the early Otodus teeth species do. This shark sits near the base of the lineage that would eventually lead to the mighty Megalodon, so owning a well-preserved example means holding an early chapter in that famous evolutionary tale. As the collection grows from the smooth-edged early forms toward the serrated species that followed, the connection to the giant that came later becomes part of what makes these Otodus shark teeth so rewarding to own.

Buried Treasure Fossils draws its Otodus specimens from several classic localities. Teeth from Morocco, Kazakhstan, the United States, and beyond each carry distinctive coloration, structural character, matrix type, and preservation, giving collectors real variety to choose from rather than a single species. The inventory also includes unusual pathologic teeth, such as split or twisted crowns, for those who appreciate the rare and the strange. A pathologic piece like a twisted-tip Megalodon tooth or its Otodus ancestor is a genuine conversation starter and a standout in any collection.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you ship Otodus teeth internationally? Yes, though some of the heavier specimens, such as large teeth in matrix or vertebrae, may require a shipping surcharge on top of standard rates. If you are ordering from outside the US, it is worth checking on postage for larger pieces before you buy.

How old are Otodus shark teeth? Most Otodus teeth date to the early Eocene, roughly 50 million years ago, though some specimens reach back into the preceding Paleocene. Each tooth is a genuine relic from a time long before the Megalodon patrolled the oceans, which is part of what makes them so remarkable to hold.

What should I look for in a quality Otodus tooth? Collectors tend to prize complete side cusps, a sharp tip, strong enamel color, and an intact root, since damage to any of these affects both the look and the value. Evaluating the specimen's overall symmetry and natural preservation also clarifies its historical significance. Because these features vary from tooth to tooth, it helps to look closely at each specimen rather than assume they are all alike.
