What Earns a Specimen the Museum-Quality Grade

Size alone does not get a piece into this catalog. Completeness does, along with original surface, natural articulation, and color that was never touched up. A turtle shell whole across both halves, or a skull that still sits correctly in articulation, is far scarcer than a large piece assembled from fragments. Preparation is its own discipline at this level. The Moroccan trilobites are German-prepped, with spines freed by air abrasion over dozens of hours and shell left in its natural color. On larger bone, crack fill is noted apart from restoration, and the restored proportion is stated outright.

Buried Treasure Fossils supplies Certificates of Authentication for major pieces, alongside the formation, county, and preparation history. Collectors asking what makes fossils genuine should expect that paperwork at this level. Many of these museum-quality fossils are single specimens that will not come through again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What separates museum quality from top quality? Grade tracks completeness and originality rather than price. A top-quality specimen is a strong example of its kind. A museum-quality one is whole, articulated, and prepared to a standard that would hold up in an institutional display.

What does German preparation mean on a trilobite? It describes a hand-finishing tradition applied to Moroccan material, using air abrasion to free the spines and expose shell without reconstructing anything. Original color is kept and nothing is painted or rebuilt, which is why the hours run high.

Does restoration disqualify a piece from this category? Not necessarily, provided it is disclosed. Large horns and claws often need minor stabilization to survive collection, so each listing states the restored proportion and keeps it separate from crack fill. Undisclosed restoration is the problem, not restoration itself.

Do these come ready to display? Most do. The large horns ship on custom steel stands, and the claws arrive in Riker frames. Heavier specimens carry a weight note, since international shipping on them is quoted separately.
