Shark Vertebrae

Very few parts of the shark will fossilize since the shark's skeleton is cartilaginous. The vertebral disks will occasionally fossilize, and they are quite rare compared to the shark teeth. This catalog contains excellent fossil shark vertebrae from a variety sharks species. These vertebrae are rarely found and exceptional specimens are very difficult to obtain. These vertebrae were found in Miocene Pungo River Formation (15 million years old) and the Pliocene Yorktown formation. Note - there are a variety of shark species and a few ray species represented.
