Megalodon Shark Teeth

Buried Treasure Fossils offers an excellent selection of quality Megalodon teeth for sale. The Megalodon shark was the largest shark that ever lived reaching lengths of 60 feet. This megatooth shark lived during the Miocene and Pliocene. Megalodon teeth have serrated cutting edges without side cusps. Megalodon teeth can be quite large and exceed 7 inches, but rarely exceed 6" to 6-1/2". We offer several Megalodon teeth for sale over 6 inches. These large teeth plus the highest estimated bite force of any animal (up to 180,000 newtons) allowed the Megalodon to bite through massive prey. The diet of an adult Megalodon consisted of whales and other large marine mammals.

We also offer Megalodon teeth from a wide selection of localities including Florida, Georgia, Lee Creek, No. Carolina, So. Carolina, Sharktooth Hill (California), Chile and Peru. Authenticity guaranteed.

Be sure to see our great selection of Megalodon ancestors as well - Chubutensis, Angustidens, Auriculatus, and Earlier Megalodon Ancestors.

The Megalodon shark, now extinct, is believed to have been the largest prehistoric marine predator in the world. It may have been an ancestor to the Great White or other sharks that are here today, however, it was much larger in comparison. Fossil collectors, scientists, and hobbyists all want to have Megalodon teeth in their collection. These are likely the largest fossilized teeth that you will ever see with some ranging up to 7 inches in size.

About the Prehistoric Megalodon Shark

The Megalodon shark was undeniably one of the largest animals that ever inhabited our planet. The name Megalodon means large tooth because of the huge teeth that the animal had. The Megalodon was thought to have been up to 60 feet in length and weighed 50 to 75 tons. In comparison, the Great White shark, while still large, ranges only from 20 to 30 feet in length. Megalodon likely ate many other types of marine life including giant whales. Scientists believe that they used their sharp teeth to bite off the fins of fish before crushing them with their powerful jaws. Researchers have determined that the Megalodon could shut its jaws with a force of up to 18 tons per square inch. The Great White shark is capable of shutting its jaws with a force of about 1.8 tons.

Megalodon Teeth

Although it lived millions of years ago you can still find fossilized Megalodon teeth. Sharks are one species that continually lose and grow new teeth throughout their lifetime so there could be millions of megalodon teeth in the world. Because this giant shark was known to inhabit the entire globe, its teeth can be found in many areas around the world. The Megalodon was found everywhere and was only unable to enter close to the coast due to its enormous size. Megalodon teeth are heart-shaped and have serrated edges. These teeth can be found in almost all the coastal waters around the world. Some of the most recent teeth have been located off the coast of the United States near North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and California. One of the most exciting places in the United States for scientists and those seeking fossilized shark teeth is called Shark Tooth Hill in California. It is known to have many fossilized shark teeth. If you aren’t lucky enough to live near an area where you can find your own shark teeth, don’t worry. You can find shark teeth for sale to add to your collection. Every collector and scientist would like to have a prehistoric shark tooth specimen for display. These giant teeth are a wonder to behold and a reminder of prehistoric life on our planet. They are ideal for teachers and hobbyists. When you choose a shark tooth you will want to look at the quality, size, color, and condition. The largest teeth and those in the best condition are the rarest and therefore command the most money. Smaller teeth are quite affordable and are perfect for the beginning collector.

Megalodon Teeth for Sale

Prior to being recognized as coming from a giant prehistoric fish, fossilized Megalodon teeth were thought to be dragon tongues or moon rocks. It wasn't until the second half of the 17th century that Megalodon teeth were classified as shark teeth. Today, if you find Megalodon teeth for sale, you can be certain they came from a monstrous fish that used to prowl planetary seas. Megalodon teeth for sale come from a long-gone sea creature that grew to nearly 60 feet long. Bigger than any fish alive today, Megalodon snacked on prehistoric whales as a matter of habit. It took massive teeth to perform such a feat, so Megalodon teeth grew to more than seven inches long. In the 1700s, paleontologists examining a prehistoric whale discovered bite marks that indicated it had been killed and devoured by at least one Megalodon. Scientists learn a lot from the hundreds of fossilized Megalodon teeth that have been discovered between 1666 and now. Teeth and spinal centra are the only parts of the now extinct fish that scientists can examine because the rest of the cartilaginous fish dissolved in salt water many eons ago. Megalodon teeth for sale are possible due to the process of petrification wherein the calcium and other organic materials in the fish tooth transform into stone. Not unlike a tree, biologists can count the rings of a spinal artifact to determine the fish's age. By analyzing the distance between the rings, the scientist can estimate the growth rate of an individual monster fish.

Almost all the teeth found at the site belonged to juvenile fish. By studying the fossilized teeth, scientists determined that newly hatched Megalodon were around 20 feet long. That's as long as the largest Great White sharks ever measured.
