A rare, Top Quality Columbian Mammoth (Mammuthus columbi), an early elephant molar found in Patricio Co., Texas.  Mammoths were present in this area during the Late Pleistocene Ice Age. Two very nicely preserved Scyphocrinites elegans crinoids from Alnif, Morocco. The Scyphocrinites crinoid was a floating variety which was attached to a holdfast air bladder that supported multiple stems and calyx ("flower"). These crinoids have a bulbous calyx with incredible detail. The upper crinoid has a stem section of 2-1/2". These crinoids make fantastic display pieces. Matrix size: 12" x 9". An incredible multi-specimen example on a reasonably sized piece of matrix. An ultra rare, Top Quality EXTRA LARGE Edestus heinrichi shark whorl section with 4 big crowns, from Sparta, Illinois. An August Fossil of the Month. This is a Paleozoic shark that lived in swamps that our now underground coal deposits. Excellent preservation and serrations. Note - extra long root whorl section with 4 extra large crowns - very rare. The Edestus shark would have an upper and lower tooth whorl that are vertically opposed. Research showed that they could use their opposing teeth in a scissor-like motion to cut prey. It is the first animal to cut vertically. A very strange looking and unique acting shark. This is a Paleozoic shark that lived in swamps that our now underground coal deposits. An ultra rare assoiiated pair of tooth whorls. Note - the crown tips are naturally rounded (polished)  which thought to be due to wear from the vertical whipping motion used to slice prey. Excellent preservation, serrations, and serration detail. The Edestus shark would have an upper and lower tooth whorl that are vertically opposed. Research showed that they could use their opposing teeth in a scissor-like motion or a vertical whipping motion to cut prey. It is the first animal to cut vertically. A 2nd May 2016 Fossil of the Month is a GEM light brown colored "Picture" Megalodon - PRINCIPAL ANTERIOR tooth. Fantastic colors - a mix of light brown, reddish brown, some blue and charcoal highlights. Highest quality enamel - glass-like surface with no hydration cracks.
