This catalog contains exceptional teeth from the big-tooth Mako shark - Isurus xiphodon. Note - this species is now being lumped back into hastalis, and it was recently renamed twice (Cosmopolitodus and Carcharodon) to suggest it was not a Mako shark, but a new shark genera that is the pre-cursor to the Great White shark. The Isurus xiphodon is the widest form of the Mako shark which is believed to be the extinct ancestor or the Great White shark, Carcharodon carcharias. A Top Quality, Carcharodon hastalis, Mako shark tooth (upper anterior jaw tooth) from the Lee Creek mine, Aurora, No. Carolina. Note - This tooth exhibits the classic characteristic shape of the middle Miocene Mako teeth found both in the Lee Creek mine and the NC red site. I do not see this Mako tooth shape from other Miocene deposits. Possibly a hastalis species variation and it is referred to as the "narrow form". Maximum size is approximately 2". This tooth has a rich blue crown and a brown colored root. Excellent colors! Razor sharp cutting edge. Excellent preservation - note nutrient hole on root.
