Edestus - Scissor Tooth Shark

The Edestus heinrichi is called the "Whorl-toothed", Scissor  tooth or Coal shark. It is a very rare Pennsylvanian age shark species found in underground coal mines in Illinois and surrounding states. Each tooth exhibits a unique broad triangular crown with large serrations. The roots are also quite unique as they appear as group of individual "long arms" with the crown at the end. The roots would stack and interlock to form a "tooth whorl" as per the photo above. The Edestus shark would have an upper and lower tooth whorl that are vertically opposed. Research showed that they could use their opposing teeth in a "scissor-like" biting and / or a vertical whipping motion to cut prey. It is the first animal to use two opposing linear rows of teeth (whorls) cut vertically. A very strange looking and unique acting shark. Authenticity guaranteed.
