Otodus chubutensis
This catalog contains exceptional copper red colored teeth from Otodus chubutensis, the predecessor of the Megalodon. These teeth are from the early Miocene Pungo River Fm. (like the Lee Creek site), but are found in the northern part of the state known for the copper red colored teeth. These copper red colored teeth are quite rare and very difficult to find which adds to their rarity. All teeth listed are near museum quality or better. NO restoration or repair in this group! One of the rarest Chub teeth to have in your collection and my supply is very limited! Excellent selection. Try finding a Chubutensis tooth with the rare copper red colors!
Additional Features Collectors Appreciate
Each Carcharocles chubutensis tooth offers distinctive features worth examining up close. Several details reveal the characteristics of this prehistoric shark and give collectors more to appreciate beyond its overall appearance:
- Crown shape: The broad, triangular crown reflects the tooth's role as a functional cutting tool. The C. chubutensis possesses two small "hump-like" side cusps at the base of the crown. This is a unique characteristic trait of this species.
- Serrations: Medium to coarse serrations along the cutting edges including the side cusps provide an opportunity to examine one of the defining features of Carcharocles chubutensis teeth.
- Root structure: A well-preserved root adds another visible part of the original tooth, giving collectors a closer look at the structure found in authentic shark teeth and how it helped anchor the tooth in the shark's jaw.
- Enamel surface: Natural textures and variations across the enamel give the specimen additional detail when viewed closely.
- Tooth proportions: Differences in crown height and overall profile make individual specimens interesting to compare.

Frequently Asked Questions
How should I display a Carcharocles chubutensis tooth? A secure display case or stable fossil stand helps keep the tooth protected while allowing its features to remain visible. Avoid placing the specimen where it could easily fall or come into contact with other objects that could damage its delicate edges.
What makes a Carcharocles chubutensis tooth different from other fossil shark teeth? Carcharocles chubutensis is recognized by its distinctive tooth structure, including a triangular crown and small side cusps with serrated cutting edges. These features help collectors distinguish its characteristic form from other fossil shark teeth.
Does the root affect the overall appearance of a shark tooth? Yes, a preserved root adds depth and structure to the specimen, giving collectors another feature to examine beyond the visible crown and serrated edges.
Why is the root important when evaluating a fossil shark tooth? A preserved root gives collectors more of the original tooth to examine. Its condition can also add to the overall visual appeal of a specimen, especially for collectors who value fossils with more of their original structure intact.
