What is a fossil?
It depends on who you ask. A collector may tell you that dinosaur fossils for sale are amazing artifacts from a prehistoric world. Paleontologists at Idaho State University explain more scientifically. There are two kinds of fossils as well as two ways that fossils are made. Body fossils are the mineralized remains of plants or animals that lived and died in the geologic past. Trace fossils such as dinosaur tracks are stony indicators that long-ago life was present at a particular place and time. Bodies and traces may be preserved with or without alteration. Non-alteration modes of preservation include mummification and freezing. Shells remains are also considered unaltered fossils. According to ISU, preservation modes that do alter remains include permineralization and carbonization. Fossils are clues that paleontologists use to learn about animals that have gone extinct. Fossil remains such as dinosaur bones, teeth, and tracks offer fantastic evidence of life on earth long before there were humans to write history. A very rare EXTRA LARGE, Top Quality Torvosaurus tanneri tooth from the Morrison Fm. A January Fossil of the Month. This Torvosaurus crown measures 2" and is 1-1/4" wide. The tooth measures 3-1/4" with the partial root. This is a BIG Torvosaurus tooth big serrations on both carinae (1.5 ser. per mm) and the mesial carina extends less than 1/2 of the crown. The enamel is high quality. Great rich dark brown color. Excellent anterior and posterior serrations. Minor natural crushing on the left bottom is stabilized. Excellent overall condition. There is minor restoration at the high point of the base of the crown.. Torvosaurus was the apex predator during the late Jurassic with large teeth designed to slash predators. Legally collected on private land in the Morrison Fm., Bone Cabin Quarry, Albany Co., Wyoming. Authenticity guaranteed. Note - A Riker display frame is included. The Campanian age Nodosaurs grew to 22 feet and 6000 pounds, and a body covered with this bony armor with body spikes along the edge of the body (see Edmontonia photo). Edmontonia is the named Two Medicine Fm. Nodosaur which is a good proxy to the currently undescribed Judith River Fm. Nodosaur. The bone is excellent quality with excellent color / patina. A complete side armor spike from a large Nodosaur. ~72 MYA. Note - there is less than 10% professional restoration in small areas for aesthetic purposes at the base.
