An ultra rare, Top Quality Edestus heinrichi, a complete whorl with three crowns from Herrin, Illinois. A July Fossil of the Month. This is a Paleozoic shark that lived in swamp that our now underground coal deposits. Exceptional preservation, serrations, and serration detail. The Edestus shark would have an upper and lower tooth whorl that are vertically opposed. Research showed that they could use their opposing teeth in a scissor-like motion to cut prey. It is the first animal to cut vertically with linear tooth whorls. A very strange looking and unique acting shark. This whorl is incredibly massive at 6" long with three crowns. The whorl body is well perserved with an excellent bright line of pyrite below the crown enamel. The crowns are large at 1-5/8" wide and look fantastic. Note - One crown tip has a small professional repair (~1/8") which is very common for a whorl. Pennsylvanian age from Illinois. A Top Quality Edmontosaurus annectens lower jaw section from the late Cretaceous of North America. An August Fossil of the Month. Edmontosaurus is a very large hadrosaur or "duck-bill" dinosaur found in the Hell Creek formation. They possessed ~300 teeth that were in columns of five teeth each which acted as conveyor belt to maintain a large chewing surface to cut and grind their food. This specimen is a large section of the lower jaw showing at least 20 teeth still in place. Bone quality is excellent with no cracks. No restoration. Legally collected on private land in the Hell Creek Fm., Powder River Co., Montana. A exceptional specimen from one of my favorite localities. A Paraconularia crustala, a Conulariid, from Holdenville, Oklahoma. Conulariid, is a genus named for the Latin word conulus or cone. This fossil is shaped like a rectangular cone. The fossil is made up of rows of calcium phosphate rods which is the same material that a fossil shark is made of. This creature was placed Cnidaria phylum in the Animal kingdom, and its relatives include the corals, anemones, and jellyfish. Exceptional preservation. This is a Wewoka Fm., Pennsylvanian Period fossil (300 MYA). Authenticity guaranteed. A very unique display piece!
