An ultra rare, Top Quality EXTRA LARGE Edestus heinrichi shark whorl section with 4 big crowns, from Sparta, Illinois. An August Fossil of the Month. This is a Paleozoic shark that lived in swamps that our now underground coal deposits. Excellent preservation and serrations. Note - extra long root whorl section with 4 extra large crowns - very rare. The Edestus shark would have an upper and lower tooth whorl that are vertically opposed. Research showed that they could use their opposing teeth in a scissor-like motion to cut prey. It is the first animal to cut vertically. A very strange looking and unique acting shark. Once thought to be a "raptor" tooth, it is now clear that these teeth are Abelisaurid, a family of Ceratosaurian theropod dinosaurs with the unique straight posterior carina. A HUGE, Top Quality Ptychodus mammillaris, an extinct durophagous (shell-crushing) shark, tooth from Dallas Co., Texas. An excellent example of this Upper Cretaceous Kamp Ranch Fm. tooth. These massive teeth have a design with strong transverse ridges across the cusp that transition to a concentric pattern at the base of the cusp. Authenticity guaranteed. Note - one margin has a natural crack which contains matrix within it and the root structure is missing. This is a rare species and a suer rare size - this specimen exceeds the maximum size recorded for Texas!

A very rare, Sphenodus tooth, from a very early shark. Absolutely great preservation - excellent condition with extra sharp cutting edges. These are Upper Jurassic age from Voskresensk, Russia. Note - there appears to be very minor repair (patch) on the rear of root (1/16" sliver area); left hand corner of the root of this tooth (rear side). Repair not visible front the display side. Bargain priced for a rare, killer Sphenodus tooth!
