South Carolina - Notorhynchus primigenius This catalog contains exceptional teeth from Notorhynchus primigenius, the Seven-Gill Cow shark. These Notorhynchus primigenius teeth are noted for their wide rectangular root that is topped with a saw-like row of of six or more primary cusps. The Cow shark family is fairly rare and exceptional specimens are hard to locate. If fact, Notorhynchus teeth are seldom seen and are quite rare at the Ridgeville site. I was able to pick through a sizeable collection and selected a small group of exceptional teeth and all are offered below. Please note that the quality and color of these teeth is what sets them apart from other Notorhynchus teeth with honey or gray colored crowns and solid white roots. This is a group of very unique and highly attractive specimens. All perfect or near perfect specimens. These teeth come from a Ridgeville, SC land site and are Pliocene in age. Note - all teeth sizes are measured as width unless otherwise noted. Click on photos to enlarge. Catalog updated March 24, 2002.
