Isurus xiphodon - Carcharodon carcharias Teeth Transition Sets

This catalog contain sets of rare, top quality teeth representing the transition from the Isurus xiphodon, the wide form of the Big-toothed Mako, to the Great White shark, Carcharodon carcharias. The fossil record in the central Chile is one of the few places on earth where this transition series of teeth can be found together, and the Chile site offers museum quality examples - making it one of the favorite sites for all shark tooth collectors and investors. Asides from the well known, top quality Mako and Great White shark teeth, the Chilean site offers exceptional teeth from an unusual form of the Great White shark, Carcharodon carcharias - Transitional Teeth. These teeth are quite rare (less than 1  per 100 GW teeth found!). These teeth are noted for their wide triangular crowns which exhibit little to no serrations along the top one half to one third of the crown. These are thought to be transitional teeth along the evolutionary path between Isurus hastalis (the Big-toothed Mako and precursor to C. carcharias ) and the Great White shark, C. carcharias. These teeth originally thought to represent the Isurus escheri species. Now the I. escheri is thought to be an Atlantic Ocean shark that did not evolve into the Great White shark, C. carcharias. The Chile teeth are thought to represent the true transition to the Great White shark which evolved in the Pacific Ocean. Although the evolutionary path of the Great White shark is being debated, the Chile transition teeth definitely provides strong evidence for the I. hastalis to C. carcharias transition. These evolutionary sets are very rare and unique collector's items, making them an excellent addition to your Great White shark tooth collection.

Note - We can only offer a few sets as it is impossible to match size, position, and color for these species any more. My limited stock is nearly depleted! Please have a look while the supply lasts. All teeth are museum to near museum quality teeth. No restoration or repair!

Note - all teeth sizes are slant height unless otherwise noted. Click on photos to enlarge. Catalog updated April 10, 2011.  This is one of the best groups of Chilean Mako and Great White teeth that you will ever see with an excellent color selection. These teeth are from 6 year old stashed inventory. There are very few left - no more matching sets can be constructed. The top quality teeth are getting impossible to locate!
